Sydney (Phillip Baker Hall - In Good Company) is a professional gambler who's seen it all at the gambling tables. When he meets John (John C. Reilly - The Aviator), a down on his luck battler, he offers to tutor him in the art of professional gambling. It is the break John badly needs and soon he is making a decent living out of Reno's casinos.
Sydney's benevolence later extends to another casualty of the casino scene: the not so bright, part-time hooker Clementine (Gwyneth Paltrow - Sky Captain & The World Of Tomorrow), who is quickly drawn into a romance with John. But when Jimmy (Samuel L. Jackson - xXx: The Next Level), the casino's security guard, attempts to blackmail him it appears Sydney might not be quite as benevolent as he seems.
In craps a "hard eight" is two double foures, the hardest way to roll the dive for an eight. And Hard Eight is a tale where love, revenge and redemption are just more throws of the dice.
