Dancing at LughnasaIcon_movClass_M

1998, 94 minutes, Rated M

The summer of 1936, as Europe drifts into war and Ireland slips reluctantly into the 20th Century, five unmarried sisters free themselves from the bonds of tradition, religion and poverty through the wild abandon of a Celtic Dance.

Through the glorious summer, at the every edge of Europe, in Ballybeg, Donegal, the Mundy family shelters in their small home. Five sisters, one brother and Michael, the love child of the younger sister, Christina.

Their story is told through Michael's eyes. He feels the joy and security of his close-knit clan, but its secrets and sorrows begin to break through. They will tear his world apart. The arrival of the boy's father Gerry Evans, a Welsh man, on his way to fight Franco in Spain, releases repressed passion. The Eden that is Ballybeg is changed forever.

The memory of that summer haunts Michael forever. Memories of love and loss, of women dancing. Dancing to the tune of the Celtic festival of Lughnasa - as if their lives depend on the dance. And they do.

Featuring a brilliant ensemble headed by Meryl Streep, Michael Gambon, Catherine McCormack, Kathy Burke, Sophie Thompson, Rhys Ifans and the Tony Award winning member of the original Broadway cast, Brid Brennan as Agnes.
