Ruth (Kate Winslet) is a young woman of iconic beauty who sense something is missing in her life. Disillusioned with her lifestyle and its suburban offerings, she travels to India where she is touched by a Guru. While she finds a sense of peace there, Ruth's family is alarmed and decides to "reclaim" her using the paid services of American Exit Counsellor, PJ Waters (Harvey Keitel). "Three little steps", he says, and "it could all be over in twenty-four hours." Two days later, as the battle-ground shifts from religion to sex, a reversal of power takes place. Now it seems that the spirtual pro is himself facing deprogramming, for he is falling helplessly for his captivating student.
In arguably their best roles to date, Kate Winslet (Titanic) and Harvey Keitel (Copland) set the screen on fire in this funny, touching and profoundly changing film from acclaimed director, Jane Campion (The Piano, The Portrait Of A Lady).
