The Black Velvet Gown is a story of great power and diversity that is one of Catherine Cookson's major achievements. The time would come when Riah Millican (Janet McTeer) came to regret her miner husband, Seth, had learnt to read and write and choose to pass his knowledge on to her and their children.
When Seth dies, Riah finds herself penniless, desperate to find a home and a living for herself and her children. Abandoned by hostile relatives, Riah becomes the housekeeper for the embittered and reclusive academic Percival Miller.
