Catherine Soper (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is the daughter of a wealthy and respected doctor (Albert Finney - The Browning Version) who has long resented his daughter since it was her birth that took his wife's life. As far back as Catherine can remember, her father has subjected her to callous treatment, declaring that she possesses none of her dead mother's beauty and finesse.
With no gentlemen callers, it seems that society agrees... until the arrival of suave, sweet-talking Morris Townsend (Ben Chaplin - The Truth About Cats & Dogs). While Catherine is overwhelmed, Dr Soper suspects her wealth and position are the real attraction and refuses to accept Morris into his family. It is decision that forces Catherine to take her future into her own hands, a move that could promise lifelong happiness or heartbreak.
