A brutal murder rocks a small town in the American Northwest playing host to a world-class chess tournament. All evidence points to visiting Grand Master Peter Sanderson (Christopher Lambert) who's evasive attitude increases police suspicion. But as the killings mount, the police must rely on Sanderson's cunning sense of strategy and gamemanship to help decipher the mysterious clues the killer leaves behind.
