It is 2153.
It is the third year of the voyages of the "Enterprise NX-01", our neighbours the Vulcans remain suspicious of human activities. Although the Andorians afford us a grudging respect, our relationship with them does little to enhance our dealings with the Vulcans, who dislike the blue-skinned militaristic society.
Klingon relations continued to be strained, with Starfleet cptain Jonathan Archer again having challenged Klingon honour, resulting in his being sentenced to life imprisonment in the dilithium mines of Rura Penthe. Acher's subsequent escape has not helped Klingon-Human relations.
But, while the political landscape is familiar, the experiences of the crew of the "Enterprise" have had a significant effect on them.
Still suffering from Pa'nar syndrome, contracted by indulging in the frowned-upon practice of mind-melding, Vulcan science officer T'Pol now struggles to contain her emotions, in particular her feelings towards certain other officers.
Trip Tucker's brushes with male pregnancy, near-death experiences, and numberous engineering catastrophes have honed him into possibly the finest engineer in Starfleet, and given him the confidence to speak his mind, even when diplomacy may be a better solution.
Jonathan Archer has established himself as a firm and capable commander who will not shy away from doing whatever is necessary to complete a mission, even if it involves making tough choices about torture, combat and theft.
So when, in April 2153, an alien probe unleashes an assault on Earth, cutting a swathe from Florida to Venezuela and killing seven million people, there's only one crew for the job of finding the aggressors.
The hunt is on.
