The car-crunchin' speedway action starts when Steve (James Laurie) hits the city, determined to make it big on the major speedway circuits. He is also looking for his father, an old-time speedway driver, with whom he has lost contact. He finds Timas (Max Cullen), a mechanic who has worked for his father for years. Through Tomas, he is "adopted" by Wimpy (Bruce Spence) and Rabbit (David Argue), a pair of grease-monkeys. The four guys immediately form themselves into a racing crew, which they call "Team Rat". It soon becomes clear to Steve that his father has disappeared after a run-in with a major "midnite spares" racket... a tough and organised gang who steal cars in the middle of the night to strip them or resell them.
