1962, 132 minutes, Rated PG
In this "lavish (Leonard Maltin)" drama produced by Dino De Laurentiis and directed by Richard Fleischer, history and fiction merge in the story of the murderer/thief Barabbas (played by award-winner Anthony Quinn). The New Testament tells of how he was spared when the people instead chose Jesus of Nazareth for crucifixion. The film imagines Barabbas's life beyond this event - his haunted days as a criminal, a prisoner, a gladiator and a man searching for faith.
With performance (from a stellar cast that also includes Silvana Mangano, Jack Palance and Ernest Borgnine), direction and production all achieving the highest levels, Barabbas is a major motion picture - an epic that stands tall next to more well-known films of the era such as Quo Vadis, Spartacus and Ben Hur.
