Mel Brooks plays a has-been contemporary director who goes to the head of a studio with what he thinks is a brilliant idea for a movie - to make it silent. This, he feels, will save the studio from being taken over by a conglomerate. Incredibly it does, but only after a barrage of silent gags and comic adventures.
