1958, 97 minutes, Rated PG
Louis Malle followed his work as assistant to Jacques Cousteau in "Mysterious World" ("Le Monde du Silence" - 1955) and Robert Bresson's "A Man Escaped" ("Un condamne a mort s'est echappe - 1956 ) with his debut feature "Ascenseur pour l'echafaud". It launched the directorial career of a man who produced as diverse an output that French cinema has seen. Few who see this film forget it - whether the face of Jeanne Moreau or the haunting, improvised score by Miles Davis - and assuredly "Ascenseur pour l'echafaud" provides countless pivotal moments in cinematic pleasure.
