Jacques Rivette's latest masterpiece Story Of Marie And Julien, creates a brooding, melancholic atmosphere within a sublime, enrapturing narrative to tell the story of Julien, a reclusive antique clock restorer and the beautiful, enigmatic Marie, with whom he once shared an intense, passionate love affair.
Twelve months have passed since the end of their tumultuous relationship when Marie, (the stunning French actress Emmanuelle Beart - 8 Femmes, La Belle Noiseuse, A Heart In Winter) accidentally runs into Julien (Jerzy Radziwilowicz), as she rushes to catch a bus.
He becomes obsessed with rekindling their intimate relations while Marie, the elusive object of his desire, has become strangely distant. Julien meanwhile, who is also blackmailing an illegal antiques dealer called Madame X, has discovered a dark secret that links her to the sublime Marie.
Despite a growing intensity of mutual love, Marie seems incapable of recalling her physical feelings. Julien tries to help release her from this state and together they go as far as a man and woman can go - to a place where questions of life, death, hope and fear cease to exist - a place ruled by love without limits.
Internationally acclaimed as his finest achievement to date, Jacques Rivette creates a unique, fictional universe - blurring the line between dreams and reality, conscious and subconscious, fact and fiction, life and death.
