We know that because Flight 93 was late in departing, its passengers learned from their cell phones en route that they were to be part of the fourth suicide attack. The World Trade Center and the Pentagon had already been hit.
These ordinary civilians chose to fight back against the terrorists. The courageous revolt ultimately led to the deadly crash in Shanksville, Pennsylvania field, just 20 minutes flying time from Washington.
The passengers' actions likely prevented the plane from being used as a guided missile to destroy the US Capitol or the White House.
