Charlie Proud has had numerous fights, detentions, suspensions and reprimands, all giving Principal Harry Dewitt much cause for concern. Things at home are not much easier, and when he is accused of stealing a purse from an elderly woman's car, he is given an ultimatum by Dewitt - work off the debt at the home of the woman of face expulsion from high school. The woman in Evelyn Ritchie, an eccentric widow who has persevered through decades of hardship armed with her optimism, cheerfulness and quirky wit. Under Mrs. Ritchie's guidance, Charlie learns valuable lessons, enabling him to finally confront the dark secrets within his own family.
