2005, 105 minutes, Rated MA
The King is a controversial and provocative thriller starring international sensation Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries, Bad Education, Y tu mama tambien) and screen legend William Hurt (Kiss Of The Spider Woman, The Big Chill).
Bernal burns up the screen in his American debut as Elvis, a handsome and charismatic 21-year-old just out of the navy. He heads to a sleepy Texas town dreaming of some kind of reconciliation with the father who abandoned him as a child, only to find that he has become a Pastor with a new family - wife Twyla and teenage children Malerie and Paul. When Pastor David subsequently rejects Elvis once again, Elvis secretly begins to make his way into the family, prompting a fateful journey through sin, faith and redemption. From Oscar-nominated screenwriter Milo Addica (Monster's Ball, Birth), The King is hauntingly filmed with a dark dreamlike intensity, and played to critical acclaim at the 2005 Cannes and London Film Festivals.
