Ex-LAPD Detective and former chess prodigy Dan Marlowe has a gift. He can see things that no one else can see. But when a serial killer is put to death, the murders start all over again and Marlowe is haunted by the fear that he sent an innocent man to the electric chair. As the "Chess Piece Murders" resume across the city of L.A. and show no signs of stopping, a copycat killer succeeds in using Roman Krieg, Marlowe's ex-partner and brother in law to suck Marlowe back into the deadly chess match.
After suffering a mental collapse, Marlowe is convinced by Krieg to come out of retirement, check out of his psychiatric institute, and rejoin the case. Marlowe does so against his will and behind his family's back risking his health, his wife Amy and his sick daughter Claire.
Marlowe's psychic ability allows him to plug into the brain of the most brutal serial killer and see exactly what the killer experienced at the moment he killed his victim. Although his visions pose a threat to his sanity and continue to be his worst enemy, it is also the last chance for the FBI and LAPD to stay one move ahead of the killer and solve the "Chess Piece Murders" once and for all.
Krieg and Marlowe must now capture the copycat killer to prove they did not send an innocent man to his execution. Marlowe must fight his nightmares and keep his sanity through the never ending hunt across the streets of L.A. to the unexpected twist that may end it all.
