While on assignment, Los Angeles based reporter Karin Danes (Minnie Driver) meets Mariela (Ana Claudia Talancon), a rare survivor of one of the vicious attacks taking place in the border town of Ciudad Juarez. During her recovery, Mariela sees visions of the Virgin Mary and experience the phenomenon of stigmata. Mariela and her story soon draw a devout following, and her sermons galvanise a public in need of hope.

Based on the ongoing unsolved murders in Ciudad Juarez, The Virgin of Juarez connects issues of politics, fanaticism and religion with murder and violence in Mexico and East LA.
