Suppressed emotions, curiosity and a loveless marriage provide the catalysts for the story of Lianna, a wife and mother who is driven to re-examine and her sexuality after confronting her cheating husband. Forgotten feelings surface and drive Lianna to sexual and emotional experimentation in John Sayles' classic offering about the intricacies of love.
Lianna bears a significant burden in being married to Dick, a flippant English professor at Lianna's college. In an unhappy marriage which has spawned two children, the couple are subconsciously searching for something more. After witnessing Dick committing an infidelity with a student at a party, Lianna feels absolved from her marital commitments just as she meets Ruth, a child-psychology teacher. Ruth reawakens Lianna's sexuality and opens her tonew possibilities but Lianna soon finds that in her newly enlightened state, she can rely on no one but herself.
