Ice hockey superstar and confirmed bachelor Bobby Barbato (Michael Keaton) almost gets mugged by a band of street punks, but he manages to fight them off. When the fracas finally ends, Bobby has prevented only one 11 year old from escaping. The child succeeds in convincing Bobby to let him off the hook and take him home. When they arrive, bobby meets the boy's mother, a single parent just trying to make ends meet. Soon he realizes that the night that began with violence could lead instead to love.
