In the late 1940s, notorious serial killers Raymond Fernandez (Jared Leto) and Martha Beck (Salma Hayek) left a bloody trail across the United States. Their lethal scam was simple: lure, swindle, and then viciously murder lonely spinsters and lovelorn war widows. As the lust-fuelled lovers continued their killing frenzy, Detectives Elmer C. Robinson (John Travolta) and Charles Hildebrandt (James Gandolfini) - themselves grappling with the shocking nature of the murders - come under increasing pressure to track down the pair, who would become known as the "Lonely Hearts Killers".
