All hell breaks loose in the small Texas town of Tarl when word gets out that local convict, Bubber Reeves (Redford);-has escaped from the state penitentiary and is heading home. Reeves' imminent arrival arouses a cesspit of hostility amongst the citizens of Tart most of who have their own reason to see Bubber dead. His only ally is th town's benevolent Sheriff Calder (Brando) who has his own reasons to keep Reeves out of harms way. But when the towns simmering tension finally explodes and law and order makes away for mob rule, even Calder is powerless to prevent them from exacting revenge and turning the once quiet town into a place of terror.
