Burt Lancaster and Peter Falk headline the cast in this decidedly different war movie from Sydney Pollack - the acclaimed director of Out Of Africa and 3 Days Of The Condor.
Based on the novel by William Eastlake, Castle Keep tells the story of a group of battle-weary American soldiers at the end of WWII, who take refuge in a perfectly preserved medieval castle in the Ardennes forest, with the plan to use it as a stronghold against the advancing German army. But as they wait for the approaching enemy, the soldiers engage in some unusually rest and relaxation amidst the tranquil town...until the invasion by German troops puts them right back in the firing line.
Shaded with surreal, off-beat moments, Castle Keep is an extraordinary melding of war drama, satiric comedy and heroic action adventure that will appeal to fans of films like Kelly's Heroes and Three Kings.
