Jay Mallory (Donald Sutherland) returns to his Montreal apartment to find that his wife, Celandine (Francine Racette), has disappeared. Mallory is one of the top operatives in an international murder-by-contract organisation The organisation expects him to carry out his next assignment, but Mallory is totally preoccupied with his wife's disappearance and requests the contract be reassigned.
The organisation agrees, providing that Mallory return the advance payment. However, Mallory has already spent the advance, so he has no alternative but to continue with the assignment. Searching out old acquaintances and friends of Celaridine's, he discovers that she has an English lover. Coincidentally, his target is also in England. Mallory begins to suspect that his latest assignment is connected to his wife's disappearance.
