Lee Baum, his cousin Doris and Arthur Robertson look back on the 1929 Depression, one of the few events in American history that affected everyone. For Arthur, who saw the crash corning and sold his stocks at the top of the market, it made him a millionaire at twenty-four. Doris, whose mother owned a lodging house, got a husband in lieu of rent owed to her mother. For Lee's family the effect was devastating, leaving his father bankrupt and out of work, destroying their comfortable Park Avenue life-style and their confidence in the future. Inspired by his wonderfully warm and witty mother Rose, Lee tasted life as never before in unexpected ways.
