Dennis Burke, a university professor with a wandering eye and a fondness for young students, is caught with his pants down and "sent away" for a term. Lonely in his Minneapolis apartment, he finds a series of erotic letters to the previous tenant. Intrigued, he writes back to the writer Lydia, a convicted killer who swears her innocence. Dennis visits Lydia in prison and the two are instantly attracted to each other. Shocked at their ensuing behaviour, Dennis vows never to see her again. Lydia escapes and tracks him down as she needs his help to prove her innocence, but does Dennis really believe her claims?
