For five brilliant medical students (Kieffer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Keven Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt) the possibility of uncovering answers to the mysteries of life and death compel them to experiment with their own mortality. They decide that if they 'flatline' - stop their own heart to experience clinical death - and then be revived, they can then document their near-death experiences. Although the experiments are initially a success, they soon discover that although they've come back alive... they haven't come back alone!
