US soap queen Pat Bedford is the biggest thing on American television. She has three houses, a pool and an open-top Mercedes. Margaret Is a waitress in a motorway cafeteria and lives in a bedsit above a shop in Lancashlre, Pat and Margaret are sisters, After twenty seven years, to their surprise (and Pats horror), the pair are reunited live on national television. Pat's shoved her past very firmly to the back of the wardrobe and wants nothing to do with her frumpy relative, but in the glare of the tabloid press, she has no choice but to play along. A newshound with a nose for celebrity scandal is soon on Pat's trail, and she is forced to enlist Margaret in a rush up North to silence the only family member who would be thrilled to spill the beans, their mother.
Margaret is initially swept along on a tidal wave of paparazzi and champagne, but struggles to make a connection between the lofty US soap star and the sister she shared a life with all those years ago.
