At Richard Abernethie's funeral his youngest sister, Cora, announces that he was murdered. The day after, Cora herself is murdered, hacked to death by a hatchet while she slept in her bed.

The family solicitor Entwhistle asks Poirot to investigate. On visiting: the family home, Enderby Hall, Poirot soon discovers that all the family are lying about their alibis.
