A young governess (May) is hired by a wealthy bachelor (Firth) to look after his two young children in a grand mansion in rural England. The idyll is soon threatened however as the governess comes to believe that her two young charges are possessed by the spirits of two dead servants. Her battle to save their souls results in horror and ultimately tragedy.
