With a reputation as a tough guy in the police force, Jim Schuyler (Kirk Douglas) is a cop who isn't afraid to rough up the petty criminals and street scum that plague his city. But when his methods are called into question he hands in his gun and badge and leaves the job behind.
Out of work and looking for a break Schuyler takes up an offer from attorney Tennessee Fredericks (Eli Wallach) to protect Rena Westabrook (Sylva Koscina), a woman charged with the callous murder of her husband and who now fears for her own life. As Schuyler's interest in the beautiful suspect moves beyond the professional boundaries of the job, his natural instincts draw him deeper into her case as the mystery behind her husbands murder darkens with each new clue.
