"The past is a place you cannot escape"

In the last days of World War II, Thomas, a teenager, is forced into battle against the advancing Red Army. During the onslaught of unspeakable savagery, he meets Astrid, a determined survivor, and together they join the refugees fleeing westwards. Despite his efforts, Thomas is captured by the Russians and disappears behind the Iron Curtain which falls across Europe

17 years later, at the height of the Cold War, Thomas is recruited by theKGB and sent to London as a spy. There he meets Yvonne, an artist who reawakens his suppressed passion for life. Forging a close allegiance with Dennis, his contact, he is moved by the older mm's growing disillusionment. However, as Thomas slips further into the free world of early 60s London, he is hunted by the British Secret Police. Like he had as a youth, Thomas must again try to run.
