Lives of the Saints is a gripping family saga coloured by mystery and betrayal, spanning 20 years.

Seven year old Vito lives in a tiny village in Italy where religion and superstition still dominate daily life. He is devoted to his strong willed and fiery mother, Cristina (Sabrina Ferilli) His father, Mario (Kris Kristofferson), has already emigrated to Canada and in his absence, Vito's Aunt Teresa (Sophia Loren), the local school teacher, becomes his disciplinarian and the strength that holds the family together.

Their lives are turned upside down when village gossip forces Cristina and Vito to leave the village and join Vito's father in Canada.

Tragedy strikes en route; Cristina dies during childbirth, leaving Vito guardian to his new baby sister, Rita. But Mario rejects Rita, a painful reminder of Cristina's infidelity. Torn from his sister and alienated from his father, Vito flees.

Several years later Vito returns home for his father's funeral where secrets emerge; a family mystery which Vito slowly begins to unravel, a mystery which leads him to understand his Aunt's harsh kindness over the years, a mystery which reveals that Aunt Teresa has been living her very own chapter of Lives of the Saints.
