Set in Kent in 1899, Alfred Polly (Lee Evans) is the owner of a near bankrupt Gentleman's Outfitters, trapped in a joyless marriage to wife Miriam (Anne-Marie Duff).
Determined to make no more mistakes, Polly tries to end it all. But in a spectacular twist of fate, his incendiary suicide attempt fails. He sets out on the open road to see where freedom leads.
Polly eventually stumbles upon an idyllic waterside inn, run by delightful landlady Nancy (Julie Graham) and starts a new life. Polly faces his greatest challenge yet in the form of local villain Jim who demands that Polly clears off. Can Polly muster the courage to fight for his chance at happiness or will he go back to his old life? Polly knows the latter isn't an option...
