Yankee Irving is a pipsqueak kid with more heart than talent. He is trying to find his place in the neighbourhood baseball games and dreams of one day batting like his idol, Babe Ruth. Defeated by lack of size and strength, he finds a confidant in Screwie, a hot tempered talking baseball who just wants to be left in the sandlot where he was found.

But things take a turn for the worse when Yankee learns that Babe Ruth's prized bat Darlin' is stolen. He decides to step up to the plate and embarks on a wild cross-country journey to retrieve the bat for his beloved idol.
