From the director of BASQUIAT comes this hypnotic account of the life of Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas. Arenas is played by Spanish actor Javier Bardem in a performance that has won him both a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. With memorable performances from Johnny Depp and a cameo by Sean Penn, Before Night Falls is a lyrical, sensual and moving piece of cinema.
A journey of visual splendour, it begins with Arenas' dirt-poor but imaginatively rich childhood, through his years of imprisonment and persecution for homosexuality and counter-revolutionary writing. Before Night Falls celebrates the spirit of hedonistic decadence and commitment to intellectual and personal freedom that flourished in Cuba in the 1960s despite the repressiveness of the Castro regime. Arenas wrote of beauty from the squalor of prison, smuggling his works out of Cuba until ultimately, he found peace and freedom in exile in New York.
