Giovanni (Nanni Moretti), a devoted husband and father of two, enjoys a bountiful life in an Italian seaside town. A well-respected psychoanalyst, he sees his patients in an office adjoining an apartment he shares with his beautiful wife, Paola (Laura Morante) and adolescent children, Irene (Jasmine Trinca) and Andrea (Guiseppe Sanfelice).

The contrasts between the idylic tranquility of Giovann's home life and the disturbed nature of his patients couldn't be more pronounced until one fateful event changes his family's lives forever....

When Giovanni has to answer an urgent call from a patient he cannot go running with his son as promised. Instead Andrea goes diving with his friends... and does not return.

The Son's Room examines how each family member deals with their grief and makes the poignant reminder that while loss is inevitable it, it needs not be ruinous.
