Johnny Rio (Marlin Brando) and Dan Longworth (Karl Malden) are wild companions drifting from town to town in Mexico, robbing banks and living for the moment. But Johnny is betrayed by his one-time best friend and spends five bitter years in prison. One his release, his thirst for revenge leads him to find that Dan is now a sheriff and, in an electric, tense reunion, Johnny must pretend friendship and wait for the moment when the debt will be repaid...
A violent story of double-cross, suspicion and betrayal, this film ranks as one of the all-time great Westerns. Produced and directed by Brando, it is considered by many to be a reflection of Brando's own temperament and is a must for all his fans. Interestingly, the great Stanley Kubrick began as director, only to be fired by the volatile producer-star.
